We get many calls requesting advice on which of the two sailing classes are appropriate for their skill level.  Often people have some sailing experience and are not sure where to start.  We also get people who have been sailing and chartering for a long time (in North America), but now wish to charter in Europe and need the European "International Proficiency sailing certificate" (available if you have the ASA Bareboat Chartering (ASA 104) certification).

We have five sailing courses available, Basic Keelboat (ASA 101), Basic Coastal Cruising (ASA 103), Docking Endorsement (ASA 118), Spinnaker Class and Bareboat Chartering (ASA 104).  You can register for the Basic Keelboat and Basic Coastal cruising courses together for additional savings.

Here is a brief summary of these courses:

Basic Keelboat Sailing

  • Designed for people with very little or no sailing experience who wish to learn to be able to help crew a boat.
  • Basic Keelboat Theory #1.
  • Know Your Knots (a classroom hands on session).
  • Practical Sessions #1, #2 & #3.
  • The main thrust of this course if to train the student how to "Head Up', "Bear Away", "Tack" and "Gybe", so if you already know how to do these maneuvers, you do not need to take this course.
  • The ASA Basic Keelboat Certification available upon completion.
  • More detailed information is available at Basic Keelboat page.

Basic Coastal Cruising

  • Designed for people who already know how to "Head Up', "Bear Away", "Tack" and "Gybe", but would like the experience and certification necessary to be able to bareboat charter in coastal waters, either in the Rocky Mountain area or other sailing destinations, such as Florida, the Virgin Islands or the Pacific Northwest. Note:  There are more and more companies requiring the Bareboat Chartering course before allowing their boats on an overnight charter.
  • Basic Keelboat Theory #1.
  • Know Your Knots (a classroom hands on session).
  • Basic Coastal Cruising Theories #2 & #3.
  • Basic Coastal Cruising practical sessions #4, #5 & #6 and one additional session on the J/30 learning how to maneuver a larger boat.
  • The main thrust of this course is to give the student the experience necessary to be able to bareboat charter either our or other companies boats .
  • The ASA Basic Coastal Cruising Certification is available upon completion.  If you did not take the Basic Keelboat class first, you will need to write both the Basic Keelboat and the Basic Coastal Cruising exams (you are challenging the Basic Keelboat course).
  • More detailed information is available at Basic Coastal Cruising page.
